4010. Worked on the new Labelwriter 9.0, redesigning the master reference data import and then the candidate list.

4021. On Labelwriter 9.0 we continued work on candidate importing, ready to move on to label generation.

4032. On Labelwriter 9.0 we worked through envelope label generation then began carton label generation, considering visiting the client tomorrow once carton labeling was complete so they can start using what was ready.

4043. On Labelwriter 9.0 we completed the carton label generation but too late for a visit.

4054. At Cheetah Press we observed as the former estimator put the new estimator through estimating, then briefly took the old staff through Planning and WIP modules once again.

4076. Continued the Labelwriter 9.0 work, preparing and testing the installer and the compiled application, installing the application on a desktop computer for testing. The visit to the client for the new Labelwriter 9.0 installation and demo was a success as the key user liked the implementation only asking for the carton label text to be bigger, even if it meant having two labels on a page instead of three.

4091. Continued post-installation work on Labelwriter 9.0, taking almost 2 hours to implement a bigger-sized carton label, almost 4 hours for the single carton label and one and half hours for the single envelope label.

4102. Nnenna Ezeimo from the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University at Uli, Anambra State started her six-month IT program with us, going with us to see the client for the second Labelwriter 9.0 installation. During this visit, after installing Labelwriter 9.0 we had to address errors in the user data being imported like duplications and lengthy text and even wrong coding of states and this involved revising and compiling Labelwriter 9.0 right there as well as writing SQL code for the database. We also received approval for the installation of our MoneyBooks Payroll for a new client and the installation visit was later scheduled.

4113. Received email from the Labelwriter user with bug complaints that made us reply that we’d be back there today. However after sorting out the main issues we created the installer, emailed it to them to install before our follow-up visit the next day.

4124. At the client site the Labelwriter user acknowledged our corrections though now complained the generation of labels was taking too long; we discussed further revisions. Later we started on the next round of revisions, ensuring that on the carton envelope generation window state lists got filtered by selected zones.

4135. Worked on Labelwriter 9.0 on the new revision issues discussed with the client yesterday and continued implementing an option to boost the manner and speed of setting of candidate ranges, which had been identified as slowing down label generation.

4146. Did final testing and revision on Labelwriter 9.0 before uploading the installer to our website and emailing the download link to the user. Turned attention to the MoneyBooks Payroll for the new client, Nigerian Union of Railway Workers, customizing their database and creating the installation program CD.

4150. Spent over six hours on Labelwriter 9.0, replying client’s emails and then implementing further revision on the software—shortening candidate ranges further and providing more space for them on the labels and introducing them on the packing list report—and uploading the installer for them to test.

4161. Labelwriter client called to report that several candidates were not imported and after telling him it was probably due to duplicated codes in the client data for centers and custodians they wanted any solution that would allow all the candidates to be imported. We quickly thought about the issue and called them back to suggest that the program prompt for a replacement center while importing candidates if it encounters an undefined center; this meant we had to resume programming work on Labelwriter 9.0 and should visit the client for installation rather than sending an installer. We did visit the client and by the time we left all the candidates had got successfully imported.

4172. In the morning we saw emails from the Labelwriter user reporting issues still to be addressed and we replied that we would look into them, doing this from afternoon after the visit to NUR, uploading an update and emailing the user the download link: Restricting candidate ranges on envelope labels to the quantities within the envelope rather than quantities for the center, enlarging the labels to be able to show longer ranges and finally revising vertical collation code to take into consideration the newer possibilities of 2 or 4 labels per page rather than 3 or 6 before. The outing to NUR was a success; the installation of MoneyBooks Payroll on a computer in the client’s office went without a hitch followed by some brief orientation for the user to add his login and set up their salary table. 4183. At Cheetah Press for follow up and there were no new challenges for us to address only that the new estimator still didn’t know how to find his way around the Estimating module.

4216. Resumed Labelwriter 9.0 work to round off the remaining aspects of the software before the final delivery to the client, only later the end user emailed further complaints and we replied they would be looked into.

4231. Finalized the revision of Labelwriter 9.0 (delivery analysis, comprehensive center listing, envelope labels with box number) and emailed the user after uploading the installer. Following continued reports of slow processing (candidate range setting) however we looked for solutions short of asking them to use a faster computer. We also worked on preparing the training manual for the new FrontAccounting with Cooperative Society module recently uploaded to a client’s server.

4242. To address the Labelwriter 9.0 processing speed issue we had implemented a prompt in the application for specific subject code before generating candidate ranges to reduce the time as it would not regenerate subjects that had already been processed, and on the client computer we created a shortcut to start the database engine using more cache memory, and the users were appreciative before we left. Only afterward the key user reported getting an error message when processing one state so we would be going back there in the morning to sort it out. Worked on the course notebook for FrontAccounting also, printing out a first draft.

4253. We visited the client and found out what was causing the error that prevented carton label generation for one Borno custodian—a very long candidate range listing of 35,107 characters—and the key user chose to have list of centers on the label instead of candidate ranges and this was implemented. After getting back the user emailed on restricting the centers to just those in each carton and we did this and emailed him the download link. The former estimator at Cheetah Press called and texted about paper quantity for a book job not being right and we eventually advised him to adjust the outs value as this directly controlled the paper quantity.

4264. Made follow-up visit to Cheetah Press and it was all about training their new estimator on using Printwiser for estimating. But one good development was that the former estimator used Printwiser yesterday to produce a series of book estimates for a new prospective client while the new estimator was still trying to produce the same estimates manually using Excel. The client’s IT officer informed us that the Labelwriter user’s computer had crashed and he needed to reinstall the operating system. We created and uploaded the installer for the latest version of Labelwriter 9.0.10 and emailed him the download link.

Summary

Development and installation of the new Labelwriter 9.0 took center stage this month, seeing for the first time the importing of candidate lists. A new MoneyBooks Payroll installation was carried out, while provision of post-training technical support of Printwiser for Cheetah Press Ltd continued.
