The work is about the life of Culex, a mosquito, in water, as well as out of water: hatching, changing forms, adventures, sucking blood. This last act of sucking blood gives the book its name. But Mosquitoes Are Enemies is not just about the life of a mosquito told with some imagination. It is a little more than that. Targeted at children, it aims at being educational, as well as entertaining and challenging. It should also be useful in the ongoing fight against malaria.

It is made up of two sections (six parts): The first section has the main narrative as Part I. After this follows the next section (Parts II to VI) for the more interested reader. The narrative begins “The tiny creature suddenly felt alive inside its little egg.” and ends “At a corner, fallen dead, was our dear Culex.” It tells about Culex from hatching to death; about her adventures in the water as well as her growing up. Also it introduces vocabulary associated with the biology of mosquitoes: larva, pupa, culex, aedes and so on.

To enhance the story’s appeal there are 20 cartoon illustrations in color. One of these is similar to the cover illustration, which shows a mosquito flying over an ear. Each illustration tries to communicate directly to the reader.

The section after the narrative backs up the narrative and also acts as a workbook. There is a little game in which readers are asked to guess the real nature of things described in the narrative from the mosquitoes’ “view point.” There is a short quiz also. Part III is The True Tale, which sums up the real lives of mosquitoes, as well as stressing their threat to humanity. Part V, The Malaria Experience, is a short story based on a real-life experience. Part VI contains an index with a bibliography and answers to the exercises.

Take two teenage friends, cross their paths with two bad brothers during one holiday break, and this is what you get. The teenage friends are Jon, schooling out of town at Port Harcourt, and Lasy whose school is closer home to their small town of Aboh near Orlu in eastern Nigeria. Jon’s story is one of mistaken identity and is tied to his older sister Mary to whom he has an emotional attachment. Lasy’s story is that of pursuit of local fame that puts him in direct competition with bad brother number two, Chamberlain.

Set in early 1980s Nigeria, HB captures a bit of the culture and social issues of the time: juvenile delinquency, exam fraud, poor infrastructure, bad electricity, corrupt policemen at road checkpoints, chaotic traffic, malaria, ghetto jungle justice, traditional customs and beliefs. You are also taken on panoramic trips within a rural setting in eastern Nigeria, from east across the River Niger to Lagos in the west, and within Lagos itself.
