5182. Yesterday while trying to import a large pdf file into a MoneyBooks database using Data Manager, the computer went into what looked like an endless loop and we had to close the application prematurely; today we reviewed the program code to see what could have happened, improving on the loop processing after seeing that the nearly 15 MB size of the file required reading and concatenating 32 KB chunks of file content 478 times, eventually getting the file imported successfully after some delay.

5193. Continuing on the MBDM revision, we implemented display of completion status—percentage and progress bar—during importing or exporting of big files by the document manager.

5204. Visited NRC to oversee backing up of the January payroll and then begin importing of February from IPPIS data.

5215. Support was provided for a MoneyBooks Payroll client at our office. We took some time to show the client how to re-enter January payroll items so the result matched what they earlier generated before some blunder came to light and payroll posting for this year had to be reversed.

5226. Turned attention to producing the next EPPMS 5.1 update, looking into some outstanding issues, starting with why the posting ended with an error message during last client visit before we implemented a work-around, which turned out to be due to the new code introduced for “undefined” districts of new employees that were imported from IPPIS. Also, revised the payslip and payroll reports to include the salary table next to basic salary like in IPPIS, and improved the window for handling new pay items during IPPIS payroll import with query facility to make it faster to search for an item (image above).

5241. Rounded off the 5.1 revision of EPPMS with implementation of IPPIS grouping and selection for the historical payroll and payslip reports then revising the error log window to be maximizable, debugging a truncation error message that had been coming up for years (due to user id length being 10 in the database but 3 in the application), creating the installer.

5252. During the third technical support visit to NRC, it was discovered while attempting to backup February payroll that the database on the server had gotten corrupted, from fatal I/O error messages being generated. The January backup had been done successfully days before, so we set a copy of the backup database for local access on a different computer.

5263. Revised EPPMS to handle backing up the database from a non-networked location and fix posting issues noted yesterday arising from doing IPPIS payroll import rather than new payroll processing.

5274. Visited NRC for the successful importing, backing up and processing of payroll from IPPIS data for the months of February to April. Generation of EPPMS nominal roll for April could then be carried out.

5285. We investigated the “code not defined” error that came up yesterday for the payroll table towards the end of IPPIS payroll import (logged in the database as “no primary key value for foreign key”). The implication was that the employee id did not exist in the employee table during the insert attempt on the payroll table, but we couldn’t determine how this could happen.

5296. We identified the cause of the issue investigated above to be a totals line after the last employee row in the import data, so revised and compiled EPPMS 5.11 to address the issue by ignoring such lines. Continued research on how to call up the Windows dialog for changing date and time from the command line and a Google search on how to call date/time dialog in windows took us to the right solution, timedate.cpl.

Summary

Four technical support visits were made to NRC this month for IPPIS payroll importing and processing using EPPMS, and a crashed database was also recovered. Support was provided for a MoneyBooks Payroll client. A number of revisions of EPPMS were carried out, up to version 5.11. And MoneyBooks Data Manager got some needed changes.
